balance
As I’ve continued on my journey with my hormonal health, I’ve realized more and more that life is all about finding balance. I used to be so extreme with things when trying to lose weight or “diet” or exercise, etc… but I’ve learned throughout the years just how important it is to also let yourself live. As you truly get to know yourself you figure out what serves you (which changes depending on what you’re going through or what aligns with you at the time)
One of the things that I’ve really found balance with is alcohol. Living in New York as a single 31 year old and drinking being the main social thing to do in this city, I used to think how I couldn’t wait to move to LA where there were more outdoorsy things to do and everything doesn’t revolve around drinking.
But as I’ve grown more and more in love with the New York City life it’s also because I’ve found what works for me here. I love being social but I hate feeling like shit the next day. And with going out in New York with friends to dinners or happy hours and going on dates, I knew I couldn’t keep drinking the way I did when I first moved here.
So I’ve started ordering mocktails if I ever go out during the week and a lot of weekends if I’m out with friends I don’t drink either. So often people think you can’t go out and have a good time unless you’re drinking and I’ve never thought that. I love going out and having a good time still but I also love waking up the next morning clear headed and ready for the day.
There is a non alcoholic store, Boisson, right around the corner from me which I absolutely love and get so excited to go into to try a new fun drink! And they seriously are good! Some of them you get a little “buzz” from with the adaptogens and some really do taste like I’m drinking a real Savignon Blanc (my favorite drink). So as I’ve gotten more and more into the sober curious life, I still find balance with it all.
I do drink when I go on dates (although my New York dating life has been on a pause because that dating app exhaustion is real) and I drink if there’s an event and I drink if I just feel like a glass of wine! That’s become more and more rare but it still happens!
My favorite brands for non alcoholic drinks are Kin Euphorics for adaptogenic drinks and Lautus for Savignon Blanc. And whenever out just ordering a mocktail or if they don’t have special mocktails I just order one of the cocktails non alcoholic. And sometimes I just get a seltzer with lemon and it looks like a vodka soda so no-one even has to know! Although if someone really cares that you’re not drinking, that’s their problem..
So finding balance with drinking and finding balance with food has taken me a long time to get to this point where I am today with it but once you know yourself and know what makes you feel your best, it really helps you to stay on your path and leaning more into the things that truly serve you. And those days you don’t feel aligned or you feel like something is off, once you know what makes you feel your best it helps to lean a little extra into those things on those days.
I think not being too strict on yourself with anything is so important. Some nights I still might have a wild party night and the next day I get up make my celery juice, meditate and do all the things that I need for myself because I know those bring me back to myself. But what works for me might not work for someone else, so getting to know what works for you is so important to finding that balance within.
